The Manticore, or Manticora is a hybrid beast. It's name comes from mardkhora meaning "man-slayer" and is said to have possibly been a man-eating tiger.
It is said to be a wild beast, powerful, daring, as great as a large lion, red in colour with shaggy hair but with the face of a man. Three rows of very large and sharp teeth protrude from both of its jaws. On its tail is the sting of a scorpion, in proportion to the rest of the body - that is very large! This tail also has stings along it. The scorpion tip is fatal with death being agonising and almost instantaneous. The stings are projectile items with a great distance of coverage and the only beast able to withstand the poison is an elephant of decent size. Each sting is a foot long and thick like a bulrush.
Rumours say that where these stings land a crop of them sprouts like a pit trap for the unwary.
Arrows bounce off its hide as often as not, but a lucky shot may pierce its skin and cause it pain. The head does appear somewhat more susceptible to sword attacks due to its more human-like nature.
This is a fearsome beast and in a party of eight it took out half of those before we felled it. A most disagreeable beast to face indeed!
